How to Build a Wind Powered Car

a small toy car with a vertical cups acting as a propeller to catch wind and propel the car
homemade wind powered car

A wind powered car is an interesting and fun project that captures the power of wind and uses it to propel a vehicle. Wind powered cars are a very clever idea and are different from sail cars because they can travel in any direction with respect to the wind. This project uses household materials and a dollar store toy

watch the video or read through this post to see how

To start off you will need to get a dollar store car advertised as a friction drive car

remove the top of the car and anything under it that will be unnecesary

Cut off the front of the car and mount it so the wheel makes contact with the gearbox’s large metal round weight

add an elastic band so the wheel applies a light but constant pressure against the gearbox

Cut Styrofoam cups in half and glue them onto the top of wheel that extends in the air

add 2 skewers off the front to hold the front wheel and axel assemble.

Use a skewer as the axel, a straw for the skewer to rotate inside of and glue any lego or toy wheels to the skewers on the front

This is the final product, feel free to build a styrofoam case around the insides as seen in the first picture
